Affordable, Unconventional, Almost Modern Hot Rods You Can Buy Today

Looking for a car with a little more excitement than your current ride? Tired of your practical but drab Magnetic Gray Toyota Camry (one of 5,329 Magnetic Gray Toyota Camrys in your town)? Fret not, as help may be closer than you think. Consider owning an almost-modern hot rod from years past. For the most part, they can be an affordable, practical and entertaining alternative to a Toyota-Honda-Mazda look-alike and can possibly save you some money if you can shed a car payment. Walk away from the crowd and try something different!
Any turbocharged Chrysler product from the late 1980's to the early 1990's. Spirits, Daytonas, Omni/Horizon GLH, K-car sedans & convertibles and even some minivans! These were American-built and the horsepower they generated ranged from 143 to 225 - very respectable. And, if you're willing to get your hands dirty on occasion, these cars can be fairly reliable and practical, albeit unsophisticated and downright crude in some areas. And don't forget to include the Mitsubishi-built Lasers - up to 195 hp and all-wheel drive. Prices are still reasonable, although spend a little more and buy the best overall condition that you can find. Plenty of after-market hop-up parts are still made for these old Chrysler hot-rods, too.
Ford Mustang SVO (turbocharged), GT (V8 power) from the early 1980's to mid 1990's. Hatchbacks, notchbacks and convertibles, these are sturdy, fairly simple rear-drive cars that are popular with racing clubs throughout the country. Prices are still reasonable, although many of them have been modified (i.e. hot rodded) and to return to reliable stock, probably not worth the cost. As with the Chryslers above, purchase the very best overall condition that you can afford.
Turbocharged Buick Regal and Buick Grand National, mid-1980's to mid-1990's. Based on GM rear-drive two-door body-on-frame chassis (developed in the late 1970's). These cars were unexceptional and unexciting until Buck dropped in its 200+ hp V6 engine. Then, the excitement began - in a straight line, as the chassis design was almost 20 years old and the handling was nothing to write home about. Nevertheless, these hot-rod Buicks have a strong following today, and are still highly regarded as performance cars. Unfortunately, compared to the other cars mentioned in this article, prices are relatively high, but if you're willing to shell out the dough, many nice examples exist.
