The New Sedans

Interested in looking for a new car? Do you need a four-door for your family, and yet still want that gas mileage? Let's compare a few of the new offerings from companies in the four-door sedan category, including the Nissan Altima, the Toyota Camry, a Hyundai Sonata, and a Ford Fusion. All of these cars sell for between $20,000 and $26,000 well-equipped, and are comparable in performance and car dimensions.

The first car to look at is the Dodge Avenger, which looks a great deal like the Dodge Charger. One of the best points of this car is its good fuel economy compared to the other vehicles in this class, and that it is among the less expensive in this group. The inside styling of the car leaves something to be desired, feeling small because of its windshield and seat belt orientation. The back seat is also very small for two adults, and the trunk has not a lot of room. On the positive side the front seats are firm and supportive, gauges are easy to read, and it steers very well. If you're interested in good acceleration, you probably want to opt for the V-6 in this model.

Ford has offered the Fusion in this category, and the interior is quite lovely. It has attractive red leather stitching and inserts on the seats, the console panels are easy to read and attractive, and even the wheels are stylish. The steering of this car is responsive, and it hugs the road with its wide road hugging tires. However, the engine did not give much power for a car in this class. It was slowest in acceleration for any car in this group, and also had the lowest top speed. In addition, the automatic transmission tended to shift into higher gear before it was necessary, and the shifting was often abrupt. Though it is an attractive and comfortable car, it is not easy to drive smoothly.

One of Toyota's mainstays is the Camry, and this is another in the line of solid and dependable vehicles. The ride has improved so that it is very quiet, the transmission performs much like a Lexus, and the ride feels almost as if you are in a limousine. The inside is comfortable and well designed, as one would expect from a Camry. The drawbacks to this car are its emergency driving responses, it does not corner well in skids, it does not change lanes quickly, and it has more body roll than the other cars. It also has less horsepower than the other cars in this class. However, if you love an extremely comfortable, quiet, dependable car the Camry is, as usual, a great choice.

The Sonata has gotten closer to the performance and the styling of a Honda as the years have gone by. The inside has gotten a bit of a makeover, where the center console especially seems much more classic. Also the front of the car, especially the new headlights and grill, give the car a more solid look. It looks somewhat similar to a Lexus. Hyundai has also increased the horsepower of the Sonata and reduced the noise of the engine. As is usual with a Hyundai, the standard equipment model has a lot of features that include alloy wheels, a sunroof, and a nice stereo and CD changer. The inside is quite spacious and the trunk has good capacity. The disadvantages in this car is that it rolls a bit much when shifting lanes, and does not respond as quickly. However the transmission shifts smoothly and well, and this car is a nice long-distance driver.

Finally Nissan's current offering is the sleekest in this group. It looks more like a sports car than any of the others, and has the quickest acceleration, and also the quickest start. Though the Altima can have higher than usual freeway entrance noise, the manumatic transmission has great control and shifts smoothly at just the right time. The Altima is a solid car with a great exterior profile. The inside tends to be darker and the car has slightly worse fuel economy than the others in this class, but like most of the other cars it gives a solid and comfortable ride.
